Respiratory Therapist

JOB TITLE:              Respiratory Therapist


DEPARTMENT:      Nursing


REPORTS TO:         Director of Respiratory Therapy




EDUCATION:          A.A.S. from accredited respiratory therapy program. B.S. Preferred


LICENSES:              Must be licensed by the State of New York. BLS required. ACLS preferred, may be required after hire.


EXPERIENCE:        Minimum of 1-2 years experience in acute care.  Additional background in Long-term Care, Homecare or Rehabilitation preferred.


KNOWLEDGE NEEDED FOR JOB:        Advanced respiratory assessment skills. Strong foundational knowledge in respiratory care procedures, equipment, and medications.


SKILLS NEEDED:   Telephone skills, verbal and written communication skills, typing, computer data entry, organizational skills, and strong customer service skills.


WORK SCHEDULE: Part time and full time hours available. Shift is a 7.5or 11.5 hours D/E/N. Rotating weekends and holidays. Days vary.


FLSA STATUS:  Hourly/non-exempt


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:    May be required to remain on feet for duration of shift. Must be able to move and safely handle oxygen tanks, respiratory devices, and life safety equipment.

JOB SUMMARY:    Under the direction of the Medical Director and acting on physicians order, performs those tasks indicated for the implementation of Respiratory Care and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Assesses patients and develops focused care plan for treatment. Collaborates with medical staff and interdisciplinary team to identify, communicate, and overcome barriers to implementation. Serves as clinical resource and educator to all staff and patients.



Include but are not limited to the following:


  • Maintains, monitors, and evaluates continuous and intermittent mechanical ventilation via multiple interface types.


  • Administers pharmacologically active agents and/or bland aerosols to achieve therapeutic goals. Recommends changes to medication regimen based on assessment.


  • Initiates, monitors and maintains supplemental oxygen delivery systems as part of oxygen therapy or as part of weaning procedures for residents on ventilators and/or oxygen.


  • Assures required documentation is completed for work performed and is in compliance with policy and law.


  • Attends and actively participates in staff and interdisciplinary team meetings.


  • Facilitates the development of staff by participation in orientation as needed and utilizes teaching moments to improve staff knowledge.


  • Responsible for identifying problems and taking corrective action.


  • Performs arterial blood gas testing and analyzes results from point of care or lab based equipment.


  • Performs pulmonary function tests for diagnostic, evaluative screening and monitoring purposes. Utilizes results to recommend changes in plan of care.


  • Serves as a clinical lead during resuscitation efforts and initiates or performs CPR including airway management, manual ventilation, and external cardiac compression as indicated.


  • Performs clinical responsibilities on unit as needed within scope of practice.


  • Participates in intra- and inter- facility patient transports that require the maintenance of continuous ventilation, complex airways, or complex respiratory support.


  • Participates in prospective patient screening evaluations if needed.


  • Acts as a resource for other staff members, patients, and families.


  • Performs routine maintenance of Respiratory Therapy Equipment including disassembly, disinfection, cleaning and re-assembly and to check for proper function to ensure resident safety.


  • Performs equipment and disposable changes as per policies and procedures.


  • Participates in the investigation and evaluation of new equipment, procedures and technologies for the improvement of respiratory and resident care.


  • Participates in Quality Improvement activities.


  • Performs other related tasks necessary to fulfill needs of the department.
